Business Mirror - Health and Fitness

RECOGNIZED as one of the founders and directors of the highly anticipated Condura Skyway Marathon along with his brother Ton, Patrick Concepcion has been running longer and farther than the average fitness enthusiast. A runner since the early 1980s, when races were few and far between, and reliable running stores even less so, Patrick has lost count of how many races he has finished, much less the miles he has put in his legs. Some of his favorite races include the Condura Skyway Marathon and the Milo Marathon Series. But the most memorable for him were The Malibu Marathon 2011, Macau International Marathon 2012 and The Tokyo International Marathon 2011.
Ask him his weekly mileage and he will answer “between 90 and 100” kilometers, perhaps twice or thrice more than the average jogger.

With such a relatively high volume, it’s no surprise that Patrick wears down his shoes after just a few months. “I rotate among several pairs every week, but at the end of the year I have quite a number of pairs I’m ready to give away,” he says.

As experienced runners will tell you, a running shoe loses its particular support and cushioning after several hundred kilometers. It may still retain its normal external appearance, but the way it deforms and rebounds on foot strike and toe-off may have already changed, altering the runner’s biomechanics and opening the possibility for injury.

It goes without saying that a prolific runner like Patrick is a frequent visitor at RUNNR, the pure running specialty store that opened its first branch in Bonifacio High Street in 2009 and has since opened three more outlets in TriNoma, Alabang Town Center & Ayala Center Cebu and has also set up RUNNR corners in the following Toby’s outlets: Mall of Asia, SM The Block, Glorietta 2, Shangri-La Plaza, Abreeza Davao and Limketkai Mall Cagayan de Oro.

RUNNR is the first-of-its-kind retail store tailored specifically for runners. It is home to a multitude of world-class brands such as Newton, Brooks, Skora, Nike, Adidas, Asics, Fuelbelt, Gu, CW-X, Polar, Moving Comfort, TYR and many others. RUNNR prides itself in being run by runners for runners. Its sales team is composed of avid runners themselves.
First-time customers are amazed at the approach of the store. Instead of immediately being steered to a particular shoe brand or price range, the customer is encouraged to try out its RUNNR FootWorx Fitting Process, a combination of three state-of-the-art technologies: RUNNR Footprint Analysis, Video Gait Analysis and the ‘Flash Fit’ Custom Insole Molding Machine that help to accurately measure the exact need of every runner.

First, foot morphology is analyzed using the RUNNR Footprint Analysis, which uses a thermodynamic system to determine foot type. Using a treadmill and a professional high-speed video gait analysis system, the sales associate shows the customer a visual analysis of his or her natural running gait. RUNNR also offers the ‘Flashfit’ Custom Insole Molding Machine where insoles are heat-treated to make the perfect insoles while you wait for only a few minutes. From there, the customer can then choose which shoe would work best.
In this manner, each customer can make an informed decision on which shoe type, brand and model will work best for his particular gait.

As the sport of running continues to surge, expect RUNNR to be at the forefront of enjoyable, injury-free running, supporting thousands of professionals as passionate about running like Patrick Concepcion.
